Home Wind Turbines: Important Factors To Consider

Owning your own residential wind turbine can be a great way to save on electricity, but there are various factors which must be considered.

Commercial wind farms can generate enormous amounts of electrical power, enough to supply the needs of thousands of homes. You may want to install a miniature version on your own property: a private, small home wind turbine which produces less than 100 kilowatts of electricity. These types of home wind turbines are intended to be installed in residential areas, agricultural areas, and small business locations to provide backup electricity power, or to reduce electricity costs by offsetting the use of power from the grid.

Site Assessment For Home Wind Turbine

Your property must be in a location that receives a good and fairly constant wind, be larger than 1 acre in size, adhere to your municipality's zoning regulations with regards to wind turbines, and you must be comfortable with the prospect of investing for the long term.

It is only economically feasible to construct and erect a wind turbine at your farm or home if your average wind speeds on a year round basis exceed 10 mph (16 kph). Only at those wind velocities will sufficient electrical power be produced to allow for an effective amortization of the original costs.

It is not feasible for your wind turbine to generate a consistent amount of electricity 24 hours a day as wind velocities at any location will vary widely from one hour to the next. The decrease of wind velocity by ten percent will drop the electricity production from a small wind turbine by 25%, but if the wind velocity doubles, you will be generating 8 times as much electricity.

Sell Excess Wind Power Back To Your Utility Company

There is the possibility where you may engage your electric utility with net billing or net metering where you are able to pour back into the grid any power which is generated in your location by your personal residential wind turbine back to your utility. What this will do in effect is to roll back your electric meter.

Avoid Nearby Structures That Block Wind

Keep in mind if that nearby buildings, hills, silos, or tree lines will obstruct the wind from blowing on the wind turbine your power generation will be minimized. Also remember that wind speeds are always greatest at the summit of a hill, on the shore of a lake or sea, and in any place where there are not many obstacles around. Make sure that your location is an area where the wind comes in cleanly and not in a turbulent manner.

It is important to inform your neighbors that you plan to install a wind turbine in order to avoid later conflict. Keep the wind turbine at least 250 yards away from any neighbors' residence.

The more common type of turbine are the horizontal axis ones which need to be directed into the wind. In order to do so they usually have a vane at their tail which will continually steer them into the prevailing wind direction. Turbines with a vertical axis work regardless of the wind direction but require considerably more space: they require guide wires to affix them which are much longer than the horizontal axis turbine models.

When considering whether the green and practical source of wind powered electricity is suitable for your home or farm you should first weigh all the factors. This will ensure that the decision makes good economic sense.
