Climate Change: Scientific Fact or Political and Financial Gold Mine

On December 3, 2009 Phil Jones, the director of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom resigned his position. The decision came in the wake of an email scandal that has rocked the climate-change debate around the world. In November, a hacker breached the unit's database, gaining access to and subsequently publishing hundreds of emails. The content of those communiques strongly suggests that scientists have been filtering the climate information released to the public between 1996 and 2000 in an effort to preserve funding for their studies proving the existence of man-made global warming. Defenders of the CRU say the scandal, known in some circles as "Climategate," is nothing more than an effort to sabotage the Copenhagen climate summit, scheduled for December 7-18, 2009.

Mike Hulme, a climate scientist employed at the CRU in the 1990s, commented on the stolen emails, some authored by himself, in an article for The Wall Street Journal on December 4, 2009. "One thing the episode has made clear is that it has become difficult to disentangle political arguments about climate policies from scientific arguments about the evidence for man-made climate change and the confidence placed in predictions of future change. The quality of both political debate and scientific practice suffers as a consequence." Hulme cites a survey conducted by The Times indicating only 41% of Britons believe climate change is man made, with even fewer Americans willing to accept that man is at fault for the earth's altering environment.

Hume argues that the science is not "done" or "settled," and that the real disagreements are in fact over "our political preferences, ethical principles, and value systems." Prof. Jones, in his comments upon his resignation, stood firm in his assertion that we know that, "the world is warming . . . based on a range of sources; not only temperature records but other indicators such as sea level rise, glacier retreat and less Arctic sea ice." The question, however, is what is causing these changes; who, if anyone, is to blame; and what are the far-reaching political and social implications of climate science turned politics.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his government define climate change as "the moral issue of our times," however 59% of the British people disagree, have not made up their minds, or think the whole thing is a scam. No doubt much of their reaction stems from the government's desire to impose a higher green tax to meet the carbon emission reduction goals already on the books in the United Kingdom -- 34% fewer emissions by 2020 and an ambitious 80% cut by 2050.

Both Brown and U.S. President Barack Obama will attend the Copenhagen summit with far less popular backing than they would like. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a climate change bill in June 2009 that would put in place a cap and trade system for emissions on a reduction schedule of 17% by 2020 and 83% by 2050. That legislation has, however, stalled in the Senate, sending Obama to Copenhagen essentially empty handed and facing the same conundrum as his predecessors; asking other nations to make drastic, legally-mandated emissions cuts when the U.S. has no such law on the books.

While the quest for cleaner air and water and protecting endangered species and environments has merit in and of itself, the matter of emissions control raises the potential for the emergence of a new, highly profitable commodities market. Already in the United States, where regional voluntary carbon markets have evolved, traders are buying and selling carbon credits. The multi-national European Union Emission Trading System is the largest in the world. In the cap and trade scenario envisioned by the Obama administration, companies in the United States that are unable to meet the legally mandated guidelines would be able to purchase carbon credits from cleaner entities that earned those credits -- and their profit potential -- through cleaner operation. With the European system already fully functional, the entire scenario is primed to become a vast and highly lucrative international market if nationwide carbon trading comes online in the United States.

It is little wonder that pure scientific discourse has been subsumed by larger political and financial goals in this debate. People are generally willing to make sacrifices for the greater good when the need for those sacrifices has been clearly and honestly illustrated. In the case of climate change, however, the potential for increased taxes on the one hand and the development of a wholly new commodities market accessible to a select few on the other, raises the public hackles. Regardless of what many would have the people believe, climate science, as Dr. Hume points out, is not set on a single answer, but politicians and industrialists would appear to have arrived at a single conclusion -- there are tax dollars to be gained and profits to be made in supporting the theory of man-made global warming.

Who are we kidding with this Summit? All it is, is a way for world leaders to spend more tax payers money for another jaunt around the world instead of using that money to help out the needy in thier countries. Obama talks about it working 40 years from now, taxpayers like me in my age group will not be here in 40 years and how can any fool predict something 40 years from now. Get real, unless the countries who abuse our atmosphere stop their factories from producing the goods and make cars only run on batteries, this will never happen, ergo, Global warming and Green is just a scam, Al Gore and his Pulitzer Prize is a joke.

@John – You’re right. This is a scam! The UK Telegraph is reporting these alarmist have already reserved 1,200 limos and 140 private planes. How can anyone with an ounce of common sense watch these people in action and believe their argument holds any water? This is about control and globalization. Nothing more than that.

  3. Peggy McGilligan Says:

In 1971, I first encountered the GLOBAL WARMING CULT. Terry McAuliffe was pushing the fledgling global flooding ideology out of a cleverly named unisex-clothing shop called Hang-Ups, in a converted African American Baptist Church, acquired under false pretenses and perhaps prophetically christened THE ARK, on South Patrick Street, in Alexandria, Virginia. THE ARK was supposed to rival the famous New York Fillmore East, but folded a short time later due to corrupt business practices.

Although persuasive, the global flooding argument didn’t ring true. I knew that NASA, the military and government agencies did extensive climate research, and said as much. If global warming could melt the polar ice caps thus causing global flooding by 1976, the alarm would come from the aforementioned sources. Terry McAuliffe, who probably named THE ARK himself, took me aside and explained, when it came to global warming; you couldn’t trust the government to tell the truth.

As we now know, 1976 came and went without global flooding. I still had that $45-dollar pair of striped slacks just like Hillary’s. I don’t know which was worse. I never regretted being booted from the cult (I was hardly ever in), and never expected to run into Terry or his people again, especially decades later in sunny California. Yet there they were on the Central Coast, singing the same old tune but with some major new accompaniments. They had applied the global warming hysteria to higher education. Like global warming itself, education now became a massive fraud scheme designed to enrich the GLOBAL WARMING CULT. By 1995, the cult had grown exponentially. There would be much more to manmade global warming than mere water spotting: http://theseedsof9-11.com

    Follow the Money
“U.N. climate chief cashes in on carbon tied to conglomerate that stands to make hundreds of millions in emissions scheme…”
A story emerging out of Britain suggests “follow the money” may explain the enthusiasm of the United Nations to pursue caps on carbon emissions, despite doubts surfacing in the scientific community about the validity of the underlying global warming hypothesis.
A Mumbai-based Indian multinational conglomerate with business ties to Rajendra K. Pachauri, the chairman since 2002 of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, stands to make several hundred million dollars in European Union carbon credits simply by closing a steel production facility in Britain with the loss of 1,700 jobs.

It is amazing to me that so many fall for this without facts or knowledge of the scientific process.
Where is the data to support the findings? We know the Earth goes through cycles of warming and cooling
Climate changes by nature and will continue to do so long after mankind is long gone. I have seen
nothing that supports what is being published, nor do I hear anyone talking about the glacier and ice
build up in and around the southern pole.

Do people not remember that this was also being debated in the 70s under the Carter admin?
BUT, it was that an iceage was coming and the earth was cooling!! This is yet another way for Governments to generate policies/bills to increase tax revenues and regulate business and destroy capitalism.

Politicians are not scientists. Follow the money! Scientists and Colleges that support support human
caused global warming, oh note it is not called that any more, but climate change, receive there funding
from government! Politics at it’s best!

This is about control plain and simple!

  6. Kent Harper Says:

“Scientific Fact or Political and Financial Gold Mine” It’s both. Bjorn Lomborg seems to be the sanest voice in the debate. Although the earth has been warming since the last glaciation, with it’s natural and little understood warming and cooling periods, it’s only logical to presume that human activity is involved in the continued warming. There’s observational, as well as theoretical science, to back up that logic. But to what degree human activity is responsible, what mediation is reasonable, and what other priorities should be addressed are the crucial political issues. Draconian measures that do not stabilize climate, as much as they place all human enterprise under greater centralized control, worry me more than a warmer earth. And the debate has aggravated the tension between the Haves and Have-nots, another reason for great concern. Science is providing the data, but the movement is driven by power, money and fear.

  7. Brent Crouch Says:

@Tim – Well said. I well remember being taught in school about the coming ice age and how we were all going to freeze.

What is amazing to me is how some everyday citizens that have nothing to gain from the global warming myth still refuse to recognize the recent developments as evidence that we are being lied to. I recently wrote an email to an owner of a competing alternative energy site and mentioned an article he had posted on climate change and how he should consider updating it.

Here is how the conversation went.

Shouldn’t you update that since it has become clear that if there is a consensus on climate change, that consensus could very well be based on false data since these global warming scientists have been clearly corrupted by the profit motive and without a doubt have been cooking the numbers to obtain the results they wanted.

  8. Brent Crouch Says:

@Kent – I’m not sure what you consider continued warming. The reports I’m hearing state there hasn’t been any warming in the last 10 years and like Tim mentioned there is a build up of ice at the south pole.

I believe there could be natural heating and cooling cycles of the Earth. We know there was an ice age at one time. My question is what caused it and what caused the Earth to heat up and the ice to melt away. Was that from cavemen flying in airplanes and driving cars or was it just a natural cycle?

I’m not familiar with Bjorn Lomborg, but I’ll certainly check him out on your recommendation. I’m interested in seeing some real science, from real scientists, that are interested in giving us the facts.

  9. John A. Jauregui Says:

Are you angry about this obvious fraud and the national media’s complicity in the cover-up, misinformation, reframing and misdirection of the issue? Take responsibility and take action. STOP all donations to the political party(s) responsible for this fraud. STOP donations to all environmental groups which funded this Global Warming propaganda campaign with our money, especially The Environmental Defense Fund. They have violated the public trust. KEEP donations local, close to home. MAKE donations to Oklahoma’s Senator Inhofe, the only politician to stand firmly against this obvious government/media coordinated information operation (propaganda) targeted at its own people. People that government leaders and employees are sworn to protect. WRITE your state and federal representatives demanding wall to wall investigations of government sponsored funding and coordination of this and related propaganda campaigns and demand indictments of those responsible. WRITE your state and federal Attorneys General demanding Al Gore and others conducting Global Warming/Climate Change racketeering and mail fraud operations be brought to justice, indicted, tried, convicted and jailed. Carbon is the stuff of life. He (Obama) who controls carbon, especially CO2, controls the world. Think of the consequences if you do nothing! For one, the UK is becoming the poster child for George Orwell’s “1984” and the US government’s sponsorship of this worldwide Global Warming propaganda campaign puts it in a class with the failed Soviet Union’s relentless violation of the basic human right to truthful government generated information. Given ClimateGate’s burgeoning revelations of outrageous government misconduct and massive covert misinformation, what are the chances that this Administration’s National Health Care sales campaign is anywhere near the truth?

the 1979-1981 ice core data in Greenland showed that 10,500 years ago the North Atlantic area warmed up by 7 degrees C in half a century(50 years) and the CO2 emissions rose 50ppm in the same time interval. I don’t think human technology was sufficient back then to be blamed for the sudden temperature rise. This far outpaces the mere .8 degrees C. rise of the last 150 years!
The earth is still in an interglacial phase and no one was around to record the rate of changes that was going on in the past. The last most recent phase of the “Little Ice Age of the 1300’s only ended around 1850. Isn’t that around the date for the Industrial Revolution? Global warming? or we just coming back to the normal temperature for this interglacial?

Now, when you take the extensive research I have done as well, along with all the false information being used by the AGW advocates, it leaves absolutely no doubt that it is NOT scientific fact at all.

  15. Brent Crouch Says:

@Ken – Global warming? I don’t know. I could buy into the climate change argument. Anyone ever heard of the ice age?

Man-made global warming? Sure seems very questionable to me. I don’t think anyone can prove that global warming is happening due to the activities of humans.

@Eric – I watched a program on global warming the other night that revealed some of the companies that Al Gore has invested in and how much he stands to gain by continuing to push this theory.

I’m just amazed at the people that refuse to question what we have been told. Due to this article, I lost a potential partnership with a similar site. The response I got back stated, “we would love to partner with you, but after reading your article on climate change it is clear you have a right-wing view point.”

Right wing view point? Because I would dare to question over 1,000 emails where scientist withheld, manipulated, and changed data to preserve funding for man-made global warming?

  20. Richard Guy Says:

    Hello Blaise
Global Warming is a fact of life: our Planet Earth is getting hotter. The main source of heat is the Earth’s own internal heat which is increasing. As the internal heat of the earth increases the earth expands. The expansion is a direct result of the increasing internal heat. The manifestation of the Earth';s expansion are earthquakes. As the earth quakes in oder to facillitate expansion: seas recede. The recession of the seas from shorelines is the manifestation of the Earth’s expansion. The sea has been receding for million of years and the recession process as well as the expansion process still goes on today. The expansion phenomenon is global and so are the receding seas.

This simple hypothesis stated above continues to evade modern science because of outdated concepts of earths behavioral patterns. The most deeply ingrained fallacy is “ISOSTATIC REBOUND”. Isotacy is a flawed concept handed down to us by Darwin and perpetuated by Aggasiz in his Ice Age hypothesis. Darwins observation of “what he termed” Raised Beaches” should actually have been observed as “Receding Seas”. Stated another way: the seas were receding and leaving the land: not the mirror image. Darwin’s interpretation of his observation was wrong. As a result of this we are caught in a time warp of science. ” ISOSTATIC REBOUND” as a valid theory has to be revisited and overturned for science to realize once and for all that our Planet Earth is in fact expanding. The oceans are not rising.
Polar ice caps are not melting.
I’ve lived in Miami for over 40 years.
If the ocean was rising, believe me, we would know it.
The ocean level hasn’t gone up 1 mm in all that time.

From the shoreline in Miami you have to travel over a mile to get up to an elevation of just six feet. In other words South Florida is flat as a pancake. So flat that if the sea rose just one inch thousands of acres of shoreline would have been lost.

The sea is rising is about as real as the sky is falling.
It’s a myth perpetuated. For what purpose?
Probably to bilk more billions of dollars out of economy.
I’d tell you the sky is falling to if you’d pay me billions of dollars.

  22. Alice Says:

And the earth is not expanding.
One of the fundamental laws of science is that matter cannot be created nor destroyed.
In other words man cannot create a single atom nor destroy one.

For the earth to expand, matter would have to be created.
    Matter cannot be created.
The earth’s core is not getting hotter.
In fact, if anything, over time, it will cool.
Do you know why? Because heat is a form of energy . . . which cannot be created.
Energy can only be transformed from one type to another.
The energy that’s powering your computer is electricity which comes from your electric company.
Your electric company is not creating energy.
They are transforming it from some fossil fuel source or as in Miami from a nuclear reactor.

Please don’t spread these myths about the sky is falling.
You don’t know what you are talking about.

It’s supposed to be a way to force developing countires to be economically dependent on modern countries so that we can keep them on the leash. Another words this lie is actually created for our goods. Hahaha….

  26. Richard Guy Says:

Nothing is being created Alice it has already been. What is happening is that the crustal volumes are expanding as lava is ejected from the earth. Lava expands to twelve times its volume in the earth as it cools and becomes lighter. The crust of the earth is16 times lighter than the core..

  27. Richard Guy Says:

The ejection of lava from the earth is going on under the sea worldwide causing the earth to gain volume. The seas have to recede as more and more land is created. Remembering of course that the sea covers 70% of the earth and the undersea activity is out of sight and evidently out of mind. But that is in reality causing sea floor spreading. So you see Alice we are lulled into complacency by what we think we know but there is an entire universe we dont know about and we certainly dont know anything about our earth if we think it is a static earth?. You dont even know that seas recede: do you?. Naturally you will refute it because the earth, in your opinion, is not expanding. ergo my point.
