Announcement: Alternative Energy News: Lithium Hydrogen Superconductors

Energy scientists are continuing their efforts in developing a variety of alloys, substances and elements that can meet the world's growing demands for energy, while providing clean and green capabilities. Lithium Hydrogen is one of the most new discovered and one of the most promising to provide a boost to the alternative energy field.

Hydrogen is known as the lightest element on the periodic table and lithium is the element which is the third lightest. Hydrogen is usually found in the gaseous form and lithium in a metallic form in the environmental conditions found on the surface of the Earth.

Superconductors have been of great interest to scientists for decades as they are a substance which lacks electric resistance of any kind. This allows electrons to travel through the superconductor material without impediment. These super conducting elements can carry very large quantities of electricity for long periods without losing a great deal of the energy as heat.

Many scientists agree that the metallic form of hydrogen can be an excellent superconductor at high temperatures. A team from the State University of New York and Cornell University recently published findings which were presented at the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and financed by the National Science Foundation. They found that with the addition of tiny amounts of lithium to a hydrogen substrate and the application of a pressure equivalent to one million times that found at sea level, hydrogen turns into a metallic form that will create an innovative superconductive material. Although one million atmospheres may sound immense, it is only 25% of the pressure necessary to turn pure hydrogen into a metal.

When lithium and hydrogen interact they form a stable non-metallic compound: This is generally known as Lithium Hydrogen or LiH. The attempts to create LiH requires these extreme pressures and scientists have been implementing methods known as shock wave computer modelling in order to be able to compute whether the union of hydrogen with lithium can result in the creation of a new superconducting substance.

The hydrogen and lithium combination which the scientists have predicted have not been able to be reproduced in the laboratory until this study. One of the mixtures of lithium and hydrogen that seems to present the greatest potential for success is LiH6 which unites 6 atoms of hydrogen for each atom of lithium. The findings have already been verified showing that under very high pressures this reaction can form a metallic hydrogen substance which remains stable.

These forecasts also expect LiH6 to remain in metallic form at regular environmental pressures. The current problem with LiH6 is that at normal environmental pressures it quickly decomposes and forms H2 and LiH2, which is two hydrogen atoms to one lithium atom. These discoveries may lead to stable LiH6.

Scientists are finding new and surprising molecular combinations which truly challenge the most basic assumptions that science has about molecules, atoms and their structures. If a metallic superconductor which is based on hydrogen and lithium can be developed through these studies, it will prove to be a boon for green clean energy as many of the current obstacles of transmission efficiency which are now limiting these green technologies would be removed.
